Adoption

Our Office has experience in helping clients adopt children (and adults) and we really enjoy working with families to bring them together through the adoption process.  In fact, this is our favorite area of the law.

ADOPTING A CHILD

Child Adoption is the legal process by which an adult takes a child into their family, treating that child as their child, and giving that child all the rights and duties of their own child.  Of course, before this process happens, typically a loving familial bond is already established, and the would-be adoptee is already a loved member of the family.  Still, it remains important to make sure the child is formally adopted in order to give the child legal rights and in order to give the parents legal authority.

The most common form of adoptions is “step-parent” adoption where a step-parent becomes a legal parent and custodian of a minor or adult child. As practitioners we know the legal process and the court staff and procedure that can make this process go smoothly as we have filed numerous step parent adoptions over the years.

At MLO/Mulinazzi Law Office some of our attorneys are adopted and we are personally aware and understand the emotional dynamic of adopting a child into your family. We pride ourselves in handling these cases with empathy and care.

ADOPTING AN ADULT

Did you know that under Maryland Law you can adopt an adult into your family?  The same procedure, albeit easier, applies to adopting an adult.

Why would you want to adopt an adult into your family?

The Law will not scrutinize your reason.

Some people do it to make their loving family bond official and formal. Sometimes this comes along with a name change or partial name change.  The most common reason why someone would want to adopt an adult is for inheritance purposes. In this case, adult adoption allows someone to leave property or financial assets to the adopted individual more easily. Whatever the reason for your adult adoption, at the Mulinazzi Law Office, we can help make the process go smoothly for all involved.

At MLO/Mulinazzi Law Office we can help you in your child or adult adoption journey by:

  • Guiding and representing adoption petitioners not only in initiating the legal process, and advising the petitioner through the date of a hearing Representing guardians and assisting guardians with filing the required paperwork after appointment
  • Serving as court-appointed attorneys to represent children over the age of 10 in adoption actions
  • Helping parents update a child’s birth certificate and other government issued documentation after the completion of the adoption process.
